What Is Trivia?
Trivia is a game of questions and answers. The questions can be about anything, from history to pop culture. The key is to make the questions challenging enough so that not everyone knows the answer. That’s what makes it fun!
How Does Trivia Night Work?
Typically, trivia night is played in teams of two to six people. Some places may have individual players, but it’s more fun to play with a group. The host will ask questions, and each team will have a chance to answer. The team with the most correct answers at the end of the night wins a prize.

History Of Trivia
The term “trivia” first came about in 1589 and referred to unimportant pieces of information. It wasn’t until Logan Pearsall Smith’s book, Trivia: Bits of Information of Little Consequence was published in 1902 that the term began to be used as we think of it today – random factoids with little value.
The 1950s were a big deal for trivia buffs, as quiz shows such as Dotto, The $64,000 Question, and Twenty One became extremely popular. That is until 1959 when it was revealed that the producers of these shows were feeding answers to the contestants. These scandals caused quiz show popularity ratings to plummet, and they disappeared from network television altogether.
In 1982, Merv Griffin came up with the idea to reintroduce Jeopardy!, which then became a popular network TV show. After its popularity led the way, new shows similar in style started appearing on television in the 1990s, such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Win Ben Stein’s Money.
Though game shows ended in the late 1950s, trivia never went out of style. Ed Goodgold and Dan Carlinsky held the first quiz bowl tournament at Columbia University before writing and publishing trivia, which quickly became a bestseller.
It would be impossible to talk about trivia without mentioning Trivial Pursuits. In 1979, Canadians Chris Haney and Scott Abbott – a photo editor for Montreal’s The Gazette and sports editor for The Canadian Press, respectively – invented the game over a couple of beers at Haney’s apartment.
Haney and Abbot continued to develop the game until they felt it was perfect for public release in 1982. They had no idea that their game would take off like it did- In only its first year, Trivial Pursuit generated $800 million in sales! Since then, about 100 million copies have been sold worldwide, played by an estimated 1 billion people. It’s safe to say that the world loves trivia again, all because of Haney and Abbott!
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Prepare For A Trivia Night?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. It depends on the format of the trivia night and the topics that will be covered. If you’re playing with friends, you may want to brush up on topics that you know they’re good at.
If you’re playing trivia with a theme, let’s say Rythm And Blues, then you’ll want to focus your studies on that particular topic. The best way to prepare is to look up past quizzes online and see what kind of questions have been asked. This will give you an idea of the level of difficulty and the type of information you should know.
What Are Some Tips For Winning A Trivia Night?

What Are The Rules At Trivia Night?
- Don’t Cheat. Just follow the rules, and you’ll be fine. No cell phones, no help from friends or bartenders, no looking at other teams’ answers, and definitely no yelling across the bar.
- It’s not worth it to argue with the game show host about each answer; you’re more likely than not going to be wrong. And if by some chance you aren’t wrong, it would be wiser to ask a question at the end of the round rather than demanding points from the get-go.
- Be someone who likes to have a good time and also takes care of the people who are taking care of you. If you’re being served, you can leave a tip.
- You can’t take back an answer once you’ve declared it, so make sure you’re 100% confident in your decision before saying anything.
- Lastly, don’t forget to have fun! Although the competition can be tough, remember that this is supposed to be a time for you and your friends to get together and enjoy yourselves.
